Laurel’s Brynnen Thompson Has Gone From Local Standout to National Prospect

1st State Sports

Thompson received his first Division I offer on May 9 from Morgan State. Since then, the momentum has been building, and over the last four days alone, Thompson has added offers from Boston College, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Penn State and, most recently, the University of Florida.

It’s an incredible stretch for a young athlete who is quickly becoming one of the most intriguing football prospects in Delaware.

But football isn’t the only sport where Thompson has made his mark.

He’s also a basketball player and a standout in track and field. In the shot put, Thompson holds the Laurel High School school record with a throw of 50 feet , showcasing the athleticism that has helped make him such an intriguing prospect on the football field.

What stands out just as much as his athletic ability, however, is the way Thompson carries himself.

Every time I’ve had the opportunity to speak with him, he’s been polite, respectful and quick with a smile. Despite the attention surrounding his recruitment and the growing list of major college programs pursuing him, he remains remarkably humble.

When asked if he had a dream school, Thompson didn’t name one.

Instead, he simply expressed gratitude for the opportunity and talked about how God is making a way for him.

That response says a lot about the young man behind the recruiting headlines.

For Laurel and the surrounding community, Thompson’s rise is something special. To see a student-athlete from the area receive this level of national attention — and offers from some of the biggest names in college football — gives the younger athletes watching him something important: a reason to believe that they can chase big dreams of their own.

Having covered high school sports in Delaware for many years, I can’t remember another athlete from the Laurel community generating this level of attention or receiving this caliber of college offers. What Brynnen Thompson is accomplishing is special, not only for him and his family, but for the entire Laurel community and the young athletes who will follow in his footsteps.

With two years of high school football still ahead of him, Thompson’s recruiting story could have plenty more chapters to come.

From Morgan State in May to Boston College, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Penn State and Florida in September, the attention surrounding Brynnen Thompson has gone from promising to national.

For a small community like Laurel, it’s a moment worth celebrating.

For Delaware football, it’s another young athlete putting the First State on the national recruiting map.

And for Brynnen Thompson, this may only be the beginning.
